Can All Steel Buildings Withstand An Earthquake?

In certain areas of the world, it is crucial to build buildings to withstand the massive shock and damage associated with earthquakes. Unfortunately, science has not yet developed an early warning system that can give immediate notice when an earthquake is imminent. Thus, we are completely at nature’s mercy to survive an earthquake, and steel buildings must be built to withstand an earthquake at any time.

Much research and study has been devoted to learning which types of structures fare best in an earthquake. Generally speaking the consensus is that metal buildings fare better than concrete.

However, one might ask: does this mean that all metal buildings can withstand an earthquake? The answer is no. Just because a building is metal does not mean it will automatically do well in an earthquake.

Metal structures are more likely to survive earthquakes because they are more ductile – they can bend and flex without breaking. This characteristic is crucial in a serious earthquake.

The most common type of metal used to build earthquake-safe buildings is steel rebar. Steel rebar has the ductility that is critical to absorbing an earthquake and is very strong, making it the best and most effective option for building in an earthquake zone.

Steel rebar has proven to be an excellent building material that can withstand earthquakes, but it is not fool-proof in and of itself. It must be applied with the correct engineering and architectural principles to maximize its effectiveness.

If you are considering using steel rebar to build an earthquake-resistant structure, be absolutely sure your plans and methods are on target, or hire a builder who is familiar with such structures.

Other types of metal buildings are far less resistant to earthquakes, and can be quite unsafe in earthquake-prone areas. Many metal modular homes are not constructed to withstand the tremendous shock of an earthquake. These types of buildings would be very unsafe in an earthquake zone. Also, sheet metal buildings are very fragile and highly likely to collapse during an earthquake.

Researchers do not recommend either of these types of structures to be placed in an earthquake zone. Some zoning laws forbid them altogether.

Another very crucial factor that influences whether a building will survive an earthquake is the distribution of weight. A building that is top-heavy is more likely to fall than a building that is lightweight at the top. An earthquake-safe building not only should be constructed with steel rebar but it should be framed with lighter materials in the upper floors and have a heavily reinforced lower section.

The most important factor to take from this information is that just because a building is made of metal doesn’t necessarily mean it is earthquake proof. To be fully earthquake proof, a building needs to be built with the correct materials (like steel rebar) and be built according to the correct standards.

If you are building a church or a gymnasium, you owe it to yourself, your customers, and anyone who uses the building to use the best materials and techniques available to you. You want to get the most out of your investment, so give it the attention it merits… construct a steel building.

Learn How to Plasterboard a Ceiling

At some point in time, you may have to replace your ceiling due to wear and tear or possibly damage from let’s say a leak for example. Dated houses will usually start showing signs of addled plaster and inevitably need replacing.

After taking a good look at the existing ceiling you will want to make a thorough assessment so that you know the best plan of action to take. If it turns out that the ceiling is in such poor condition that you have to replace it then knocking off all the old plaster and then plasterboarding it afterward may be the best option to take.

Many people will think that replacing an old damaged and falling down ceiling is totally beyond them but with a little time and patience it is not as difficult as one may think.

We will imagine in this article that your ceiling is totally unsalvageable and needs to be fully replaced with new plasterboard to get it back to the nice flat and smooth surface that it may have once been.

Taking Down That Old Ceiling

Before you even think of starting to take down the old ceiling you will need to be suitable prepared. The whole area should be sheeted up with dust sheets, windows should be opened for fresh air and your ought to wear a dust mask and other safety wear such as hard hat and protective footwear.

So here comes the fun part! Ripping down that old ceiling that has been an eyesore to look at all these years. Well don’t get too excited just yet as before you start you will want to set up a working platform for your safety  and ease of working. Do this with trestle and boards at a height your are comfortable of working from. Use a hammer and chisel to remove the old plaster. You will also want to remove the old wood laths and de-nail the joists.

Let’s Fix Our New Plasterboard

All building alterations to a property can be messy and dusty as we have just found out but now comes the bit where we will start to see some sort or shape forming as we begin to plate the joists with new plasterboard and get it ready to be plastered.

You will want to have your plasterboard ordered from your local suppliers and ready to fit once the room is ready for it. You can buy plasterboard in different sized and these are commonly 6×3 or 8×4 with thickness of either 12.5mm or 9.5mm. Invest in or hire adjustable props to hold the board in place while you attach it.

Before trying to fit the new plasterboards, make sure the site is clear from all debris and that you have de-nailed the timber joists. You will want to offer up the plasterboard to the timber joists and fit in a staggered fashion. Inevitably you will need to make cuts and these cuts ought to be done with a sharp blade. The plasterboard is scored, bended back along the score line so that it snaps and then the remaining paper holding it is cut with the knife leaving a nice crisp cut. Use a straight edge or rule to keep your line straight. The plasterboards ends should rest on the centre of a timber joist and then screwed up firmly with drywall screws. A 150 mm gap between screws is common.

Cutting the plasterboard sheet material can be a tricky to start with but in no time at all you will soon get the hang of it and be very accurate with your cuts.Concentrate at all times when you are using a sharp knife to cut the plasterboards to eliminate any risk of accident happening.

The next process is to have the ceiling skimmed but this ought to be left to a professional plasterer as there is a great deal of skill required in achieving an exceptional finish. By doing all the prep work though you will have saved yourself a great deal of money.

cellulite London

You may have heard lots about cellulite these days and of course it is said that 90% of females suffer with this around their abdomen and pelvic and thigh area.

So what causes cellulite? There is no definitive answer but its said that a number of factors play a part. So stress, lack of exercise, overweight, poor nutrition, and poor circulation are the obvious answers. cellulite london

Cellulite is caused by excessive accumulation of bodyfat in adipose tissues. Also accumulation of toxins.

So what can you do about this orange peel/cottage cheese ugly appearnace of skin?

There are lots of treatments available like hypoxi, endermologie, laser treatments and i know many people who have regular massages to combat cellulite. Body wraps and creams make many claims too, but of cousre this is temporary and on the surface as this cannot change the fat deposits beneath the skin.

www.cellulitetreatmentslondon.co.uk will be reviewing treatments, workouts and nutrition to help reduce cellulite.

Aside from treatments there are many new inventions coming on the market like tights which have caffeine in them. I havent tried them but i am naturally sceptical, even though there seems to be a buying frenzy when these products are launched. Cellulite reduction really is a million dollar industry and there is no solution that works equally well for all. There are life style factors to consider, the age of the client and general skin condition.

Like hair removal is an ongoing battle for some, then i would say that cellulite is a battle for others.

Javea – An Emerald in The Med

Javea is a coastal town, in the province of Alicante. It sits behind a bay between two rocky headlands, Cabo San Antonio and Cabo La Nao. Surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves. The town is dominated by the Montgo peak, 753 metres high, declared a Natural Park in 1997. Javea has many aprtments and villas for sale at the moment. ( or as the Spanish would say, Apartamentos en Venta en Javea )

Montgo protects Javea from harsh north winds and it enjoys a micro-climate said to be one of the healthiest in the world. There are more recorded hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Spain making it popular with tourists and ex-pats alike. Which is why there are so many Villas For Sale in Javea ( Chalets en venta en Javea ). There is a population of about 32,000 people which swells to around 100,000 in the summer months.

Javea lies midway between the cities of Alicante and Valencia, which both have international airports and has good road connections to both via the N332 A road or the A7 motorway. There is also a regular bus service to the two cities as well as a daily service to Madrid. The nearest railway station is Gata de Gorgos, a ten minute drive away, with a regular service to Alicante.

Javea can be split into three distinct parts, all with properties for sale ( Propiedades en venta en Javea ):

The Old Town: once a walled and fortified town to protect it from pirates stone crosses now mark the original gates in three locations. In the centre of the town is the impressive church of Sant Bartolome which dates back to the 14th century although some of the structure may go back as far as the 11th century. The church suffered significant damage during the Spanish Civil War and shell and bullet holes can still be seen in some walls today.

There is an indoor market built in 1946 selling fruit, vegetables, meat and locally caught fish.

There is also a local museum, “Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B.Soler Blasco Javea”, which shows the history of Javea and can be visited between the hours of 10.00-13.00 and 17.00-20.00 and 10.00-13.00 weekends and bank holidays, but it is closed on Mondays.

The Port: popular with tourists due to its bars, restaurants, safe gravel beach and marina. The first jetty was built in 1871 and was important in the export of raisins. When the raisin trade collapsed at the end of the 19th century it became a fishing harbour which is how it remains today. There is also the landmark church “Nuestra Señora de Loreto” built in 1967, in the shape of a fishing boat going through the waves.

The Arenal:a wide beach of white sand with a promenade, bars and restaurants. There is an outdoor craft market during the summer as well as sand artists and street entertainers. There is also a Parador Hotel behind which once stood the “Punta del Arenal” a Roman settlement. On the other end of the bay once stood the Fontana Castle whose canons can still be seen outside the Sant Bartolome church in the old town.

Market day is on Thursday except when it is a bank holiday. There are three local fiestas, San Juan in June, Moors and Christians in July and Nuestra Señora de Loreto in September.

There is a large range of rental centres and shops catering to a wide range of activities including cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing and hiking.

Things to consider when buying an above ground pool

Buying an above ground pool is a great idea for improving your health and livening up your garden, but before you rush out and buy one on impulse, consider a few factors first.

The quality of above ground pools has improved dramatically over the years, so you now have more sizes and shapes to choose from than ever before but the choice can be bewildering so how do you choose?

Cost is a deciding factor for a lot of people. Obviously the cost of the pool will be affected by the choice of brand, size, extras such as decks, materials and construction but many families can aspire to having a pool in their garden.

Basically, the wider the top rails and up rights, the more sturdy and expensive a pool is. Steel is usually the base material, but some people prefer resin framed above ground pools because they are more corrosion resistant and cooler and smoother to the touch. Above ground pools with soft sides are generally less expensive.

The top manufacturers are Woodland, Heritage and Legacy. Equinox, Regatta, Gardipool and Plastica models are also good buys.

Woodland manufacture the very best quality pools and are really easy to set up. With liquid vinyl coatings and multilayer protection, sturdy resin or steel frames and quality liners, you can’t beat them. Heritage offer a great line of affordable pools in solid stainless steel, resin or aluminum with corrosion free coatings and tough galvanized steel frames.

Legacy are simply the best soft sided portable pools available. With a 40 x 40 embedded scrim in their durable polyvinyl liner it is nearly impervious to tears and punctures. Chois, Alberca, Doughboy and Quick Pools are also good choices of soft sided pools. This type of pool can be set up in minutes and will provide swimming pleasure for years and years.

Above ground pools need to sit on a level surface. Prepping the ground may be a bit of a hassle and can add to costs but most kits are pretty easy to install and come with everything you need such as pool pumps and pool ladders. If you enlist the help of friends and family, your pool can be erected in a matter of hours without additional cost that comes with hiring a professional. However, don’t worry of you do need to get someone in as UK builders are generally very good.

Whilst the aesthetic value of above ground pools can be a problem for some people, they are a great option for those on tighter budgets and will give hours of fun. The pools are readily available from places such as PoolStore and are, I think, a good investment.

Use Free Classifieds to Increase Website Traffic

Many webmasters are using free classified ad affiliate programs to tap new markets and give their guests a reason to return. If you can give your potential customers a reason to return to your site, you gain additional opportunities to earn their trust…and their sales.

Here’s how to do it. You place a hyperlink to your classified ads site using appropriate keywords for your market (“Free Camaro Ads”, “Hot Rod Classifieds,” “New Car Ads,” etc.). Search engines just love these types of links, and including these key words will certainly improve your ranking for exactly the type of prospect you want to draw to your web pages. Greater visibility means greater site traffic.

Here’s something else. When your website visitors post free ads, they are presented with an offer to upgrade their free ad with enhancements (feature ads, color, bolded listing, etc). This sets their ad apart from the other ads and gains better exposure for them. Most classified ad affiliate programs will pay you a percentage (usually 10-25%) of the upgrade fee.

Do you have your own web site? Get this nifty WordPress classifieds plugin to create your own classifieds website and keep 100% commissions for yourself. Perhaps you’ll choose to give away free ads or charge a small fee as your site visitors post ads to buy and sell their services on your website – you set the terms. Simply attach a WordPress blog to your existing site, apply this theme, and you’re up and running. You have just added an additional revenue stream for your site.

GB iPhone Insurance Fraud and the Scams People will Attempt

Vast volumes of Apple’s i phone lovers are resorting to iPhone insurance scams in order to have their older iphone unit upgraded to the very latest model, even if it means jeopardizing a felony record to accomplish this, by generating untrue claims on their insurance claim forms.

Professional apple iphone insurance policy service provider in the Great britain, known as Supercover Insurance plc, said claims for iPhone’s typically spiked by about forty percent in and during the release period of the brand-new 3GS models, comparable behaviour had been observed about a calendar year ago, when Apple realised the then new iPhone 3G model.

A recent iphone insurancescam report estimates that about 4 out of 10 claims created in the course of this period are most in all probability fake, with quite a few people deliberately damaging their contract apple iphone in order to get it upgraded to the new unit.

Sandy James, from iphoneinsurance.org.uk, is convinced the present trend by the UK’s network providers, to offer longer term agreements such as 18 and Twenty-four month periods to their clients is partially compounding this scenario. “A coupleof years ago a client could replace their phone at the very least every Twelve months, today, clients have got to hold them practically 2 times as long ahead of replacing, this is not always suitable for the technology adoring iPhone owner, with new versions coming out every 8 to Twelve months, possibly the networks need to offer more 12 month deals again”.

Grant Burrows, overseer of comparisure ltd, explained: “Whilst nearly all customers take out insurance plan because they value their iPhone, we started to discover raises in fake claims as new apple iphone models were released, the volumes of claims around the release of the iPhone 3GS was simply staggering”. We have always noticed quick periods around fresh model and upgrade launches, that claims go through the roof, but the actual fraudulence at the the latest launch of the iPhone 3GS was just amazing. “The issue looks to be that the majority of iPhone owners can only go for so long realizing that they’re a new release behind the newest must-have spec before they resort to intense actions.

Current reports signify that iphone insurance cover was the quickest expanding type of insurance in the digital devices field, with iPhone owners close to 60% more likely to take out iphone insurance cover than other UK cellular phone users.

In an attempt to kerb insurance scams, Supercover Insurance PLC no longer provide iPhone loss as part of its protection plan, this is due to the fantastically high number of claims for loss that was received from current clients at the same time period as the iphone 3GS model launched in the UK in summer 2009.

Supercover insurance, which will always ask its clients to send in their damaged cell phones as proof of harm, said in some cases it was very easy to spot which claims were not really authentic, for example, iPhone’s described as fallen out of pocket were being received as a bag of completely smashed up phone components, that could only have finished up in this state after being repeatedly hit with a sludge hammer or similar!

In one case, an individual maintained they had dropped their own iphone straight down the toilet, but laboratory assessments came to the conclusion that the iPhone had in reality, been left to soak in battery acid for around Twenty four hours, before getting flushed with water.
We can only deduce that a number of folks may go to almost any kind of length to make sure they possess an up to date iPhone, regardless of the outcomes. If you were searching for a new iPhone agreement, it may well be a great notion to put demands on your network to offer you a 12 month contract, so you do not have to chance carrying out insurance scams to always keep up to date with Apples most desirable product.
